Lesson - De-Extinction
Challenge your students to tackle one of science's most exciting frontiers: De-Extinction!
This project-based lesson for gifted students in grades 2-6 moves the concept of bringing back extinct animals from science fiction to scientific reality. Using the real-world effort to revive the woolly mammoth as a starting point, this unit guides students through the complex science and ethical questions of de-extinction.
Over 4 to 8 class sessions, students will:
Learn about the genetic engineering technology used by scientists.
Research an extinct or critically endangered animal of their choice.
Collaborate to develop a strategic plan to bring their chosen animal back, considering its ecosystem, diet, and the potential impacts of its reintroduction.
Present their findings to the class.
Complete with discussion prompts, research links, and modifications for younger grades, this lesson fosters high-level skills in research, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. It’s an unforgettable way to engage students in a real-world scientific dilemma.
