Year 2 Lesson - Flight Test Lab

Flight Test Lab: Real Aerospace Engineering, One Paper Helicopter at a Time

Turn your classroom into an aerospace testing facility! Flight Test Lab is a hands-on gifted-and-talented lesson (grades 2-6, 5-7 sessions) that teaches students how real engineers use controlled testing to build better designs. Students begin by experimenting with simple strips of paper, discovering firsthand how folding and shaping affects flight, before moving on to paper helicopters. Split into three teams, students each test a single variable (width, rotor length, or weight) against a shared baseline design, collecting real data, making predictions, and drawing evidence-based conclusions. The class then comes together for an Aerospace Engineering Conference, a jigsaw-style event where each team becomes the resident expert on their variable and teaches the rest of the class what they discovered.

This lesson stands out for how closely it mirrors authentic engineering practice: students form hypotheses, run trials, share findings, and then apply everyone's combined data to solve three real-world design challenges (a slow-landing NASA rover helicopter, a fast-landing spy helicopter, and a smooth-flying medical rescue helicopter). It comes fully equipped with helicopter templates, structured team worksheets, a landing target printable, teacher guidance on safe drop-testing, and a learning journal for reflection. Perfect for teachers who want their advanced students to experience the engineering design process as it actually happens, complete with predictions, data, debate, and redesign.
