Year 2 Lesson - Popping Petals

Turn your gifted and talented students into young physicists with Popping Petals, a lesson for grades 2 through 6 that starts with what looks like pure magic: punching a clean hole through a delicate rose petal using nothing but a quick clap of air. Students watch the demonstration, dig into the science of compression, air pressure, and impulse, and then get hands on themselves, testing hypotheses about what happens when they change the size of their air pocket or swap out the petal for something else entirely. It's a memorable, tactile way to show students that even something as invisible and gentle as air can generate surprising force under the right conditions.
