Year 2 Lesson - Science Saving Species

Show your gifted and talented students that conservation is as much about invention as it is about biology with Science Saving Species, a lesson for grades 2 through 6 that explores three genuinely surprising real world examples: robot rabbits used to trap invasive Burmese pythons in Florida, drones that play loud noises to scare wolves away from cattle without harming them, and 3D printed coral shapes helping struggling reefs rebuild. After reading and discussing these stories, students dig deeper into one example of their choosing, researching it independently and learning how to properly cite their sources along the way.

Spanning 6 to 8 class sessions, this lesson builds toward genuine creative problem solving. Students use Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast the three conservation strategies, identifying the common threads that make each solution work, before brainstorming their own science and technology based ideas to help other struggling animals. Working with a partner, they choose their strongest idea, flesh it out with real details like materials, cost, and impact, and present it to the class in a format of their choosing, whether that's a video, slideshow, skit, or poster.
