Year 2 Lesson - The Other Side

Help your gifted and talented students discover that every story has more than one side with The Other Side, a lesson for grades 2 through 6 built around the driving question, "How does perspective change a story?" Students start by hearing the wolf's own version of a very familiar tale, then dig into the idea that even everyday moments, like a mix up in the lunch line, look completely different depending on who is telling it. Through short videos and real world examples, students explore how perspective shapes what we believe is true, and meet the many careers, from journalists and detectives to judges and historians, whose entire job is to consider more than one point of view.

Spanning 3 to 4 class sessions, this lesson culminates in a genuinely creative writing challenge. Using a storyline organizer, students choose a well known story, pick an overlooked character, and rework the entire narrative from that character's point of view, thinking carefully about motivation, misunderstanding, and the new lesson their retelling reveals. A classroom storytelling festival gives students a chance to share their finished pieces aloud, and built in reflection prompts help them connect empathy and perspective taking to their own lives. With opportunities for critical thinking, strong writing, and genuine perspective shifting, plus Core Standards alignment for grades 2 through 6, this lesson gives advanced students a memorable way to practice seeing the world through someone else's eyes.
